Mitchell County Conservation Board and Milton R. Owen Nature Center has been selected to receive one of several special prairie root displays created by the UNI Tallgrass Prairie Center. The roots are grown from native prairie plants in a special tube, then removed and preserved to show the depth of the root system. This deep and complex root system gave us the rich, black soil that we know today.
They will be celebrating this new display with a supper and program on “Prairie Roots” presented by Carmen Pellish with the UNI Tallgrass Prairie Center. This program will be held at the Nature Center on May 30th at 6:00 for the meal, with the program to follow. They will be discussing the root project, prairies, and how they shaped our landscape. Please join for a great meal and program celebrating our “Prairie Roots”! Call our office at (641) 732-5204 with any questions.
